Guru Govind Singh: The Legend

 

Guru Gobind Singh (1666–1708) was the tenth and final human Guru of Sikhism. Born in Patna, India, he succeeded his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, as the Guru at the young age of nine, following his father's martyrdom to protect religious freedom.

As a spiritual leader, warrior, poet, and philosopher, Guru Gobind Singh played a pivotal role in shaping Sikhism into its modern form. In 1699, he founded the Khalsa, a collective body of initiated Sikhs, during the Vaisakhi festival. This marked a turning point in Sikh history. The Khalsa was established to uphold righteousness and resist oppression. Members of the Khalsa were given a distinct identity through the Five Ks: Kesh (uncut hair), Kangha (wooden comb), Kara (iron bracelet), Kirpan (sword), and Kachera (specific undergarments). These articles of faith symbolized discipline, unity, and commitment to justice.

Guru Gobind Singh was also a scholar and prolific writer, fluent in multiple languages, including Punjabi, Sanskrit, Persian, and Arabic. He composed numerous literary works, many of which are compiled in the Dasam Granth. His writings emphasized values such as courage, equality, and devotion to God.

One of his most enduring contributions was the finalization of the Guru Granth Sahib, the central religious scripture of Sikhism. Before his passing in 1708, Guru Gobind Singh declared the Guru Granth Sahib to be the eternal Guru of the Sikhs, thereby ending the line of human Gurus and ensuring that the teachings would remain unaltered and universal.

Throughout his life, Guru Gobind Singh resisted Mughal oppression, leading his followers in battles to protect their faith and freedom. Despite facing immense personal tragedies, including the loss of his four sons and mother in these struggles, he remained steadfast in his mission.
